USDA is seeking dry beans for using in the National School Lunch Program and other Federal Food and Nutrition Assistance Programs. Including in the offer are packaged Great Northern and pinto beans, along with 2,000-pound totes of pinto beans. The specialist for this solicitation is Christopher Edwards. USDA Purchases Packaged and Canned Beans

Dry edible beans and canned beans have been purchased by USDA for distribution to the child nutrition and other related domestic food assistance program for Fiscal Year 2019. The purchase includes packaged pinto, baby lima, Great Northern and light red kidney beans, pinto bean totes and canned garbanzo beans, totaling over $1.08 million.

U.S. Dry Bean Delegation Visits Japan

A delegation sponsored by the U.S. Dry Bean Council visited Japan to meet with importers and end users in March. Japan is a buyer of baby lima beans, purchasing up to 70 percent of production. There also continues to be a demand by end users for Great Northern beans.
 
Over the last several years, the U.S. has seen an increase in other classes such as garbanzo and dark red kidney beans. Baby lima and Great Northern beans are used in a sweet bean paste for Japanese confectionery. Garbanzo and dark red kidney bean are used in soups and salads. Read more.

Canned Dry Beans Purchased

USDA has purchased $296,546 in canned vegetables for distribution to child nutrition and other domestic food assistance programs for Fiscal Year 2019. Included in the buy are canned garbanzo and Great Northern beans. The purchase can be viewed here.
