Tips for Working Safely Around Stored Grain

After a tough harvest, grain bin safety is top of mind when moving less than ideal grain out of a bin. Upper Midwest Ag Safety and Health Center outreach coordinator Megan Schossow is seeing a higher than usual number of grain bin and silo incidents “In the event someone has to enter a grain bin, it’s critical farmers don’t go in alone,” says Schossow. “Work in pairs so if something happens there is someone to get help. Also, lock out and tag out every time.” More tips for safely working around stored grain can be found here.

Be Safe When Working Around Grain Bins

Extension agricultural engineer Ken Hellevang reminds farmers to understand the risks of working around grain bins. “Wet grain typically leads to storage issues. That can lead to an increase in grain entrapment and other injuries.” Farmers are encouraged to work in teams and break up the crust from the outside of the bin.
