Speaking at the UN Food Systems Summit in Rome, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the global food system is broken “and billions of people are paying the price.” According to UN estimates, over 780 million people experience hunger and almost one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted. Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative further exacerbated the situation, Guterres said. The UN leader also called for food systems that reduce the carbon footprint of food processing, packaging, and transportation. More than 2,000 people from over 180 countries participated in the UN Food Systems Summit.
