More Pulses
May 17, 2017

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, acreage of pulses in the U.S. is projected at a record of more than four million acres this year. Chickpea acreage is forecast to rise to nearly 500,000 acres, an increase of more than 53 percent compared to last year. This increase is due to the sustained price strength and favorable returns for chickpeas relative to other crops. Acres of lentils is expected to rise 13 percent this year, to over a million acres. In ten years’ time, lentil acreage has more than tripled, boosted by expanding sales to India and growing domestic consumption. The ERS says dry bean planted area, minus chickpeas, is projected to increase about two percent this year, to 1.37 million, slightly below the 10-year average. Dry peas are the only pulse crop projected to have fewer acres than last year.
