USDA Raises Crop Estimate

United States dry edible bean production was estimated at 35.8 million hundredweight (cwt) for 2017, up 1.5 percent from USDA’s October forecast, and 25 percent above the previous year. Harvested area was reduced one percent from October, while the average yield, at 1,781 pounds per acre, increased 44 pounds. Compared to the previous year, U.S. dry bean harvested area increased 29 percent, and yield declined more than 3 percent.

USDA raised North Dakota’s dry bean crop estimate 12 percent from October to January, to a record 12.4 million cwt, which is 39 percent more than the previous year. The average yield of 1,810 pounds per acre, also record-large, is up 170 from October and 230 pounds more than 2016. Harvested acres are up 10,000 from the October estimate, and 120,000 from the previous year. 

Minnesota’s final production estimate declined 3 percent from the October forecast, to 3.6 million cwt, but it’s still 9 percent above the previous year. The average yield of 2,190 pounds per acre is unchanged from October and 40 pounds below 2016. Harvested area declined 5,000 acres in USDA’s final crop summary, and is 16,000 more than the previous year.

USDA estimates the 2017 pinto bean crop at more than 13.6 million cwt, 41 percent more than the previous year. For the third consecutive year, black bean production exceeded navy production. Farmers grew 5.1 million cwt of blacks, 17 percent more than the previous year, while the navy bean crop increased 18 percent, to 4.2 million cwt. 

Production of great northern beans jumped 66 percent in 2017, to 1.4 million cwt, while light red kidney bean production nearly doubled from 2016. The dark red kidney bean crop declined 2 percent from the previous year. Production of pink and cranberry beans increased last year, while small red bean production declined. Production of garbanzo (chickpeas) increased 27 percent from 2016 to 2017, led by a 110 percent boost in North Dakota.
